Balls’ Supermarkets and RubyFrost apples team up to bring healthy snacks to school events

Local Parent Teacher Organizations had a special delivery from New York State this past week — bright red RubyFrost apples.  Crunch Time Apple Growers, the farmers’ cooperative that grows RubyFrost, donated 100 apples and handouts to group leaders and teachers. They hope to inspire kids and families to choose healthy snacks.

“Learning healthy eating habits starts young,” Rena Montedoro, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, said.  “I love that we can get our apples directly into the hands of PTO leaders at their events to share with families.”

15 area schools participated handing out the apples and a tri-fold brochure with apple facts for teachers to use in the classroom.  Additionally, stores in the Ball’s Supermarket chain (Hen House, Price Chopper and Sun Fresh) will carry RubyFrost apples throughout the month of February.

Grown exclusively in New York state by Crunch Time Apple Growers, RubyFrost is a very firm apple, tart and very juicy with a good sugar level as well as being very high in Vitamin C, potassium and pectin. Slow to brown, RubyFrost maintains its flavor and crispness when cut open, making it a versatile apple perfect for fresh eating or baking, in recipes both sweet and savoury.  Plump and a deep burgundy red, RubyFrost is very appealing to kids.

“Eating a RubyFrost in Spring delivers all the taste of a fresh, just-picked fall apple. Juicy, tart and sweet with a superb crunch.” Montedoro says.
